COOKING CHEFS... (as submitted to Planetary Magazine)

It is a main concern nowadays for all students in high school to decide which career to follow. After high school’s last year, everyone who wishes to have a university degree should sit for the Vestibular (Brasil’s college entrance exam), and before that, know which career to follow, because after Vestibular your career will be the one you chose before sitting for the Vestibular’s test. Concerning that, many students plan their career choice since middle school.
At the present time we are studying at Andrews, a traditional school in Rio de Janeiro. We annually have the S.I.P., which is a lecture cycle where many profession choices are presented and that endorses our career choices. This is like a boost to students that don’t even have a clue about what they want to work with.
Fortunately, my friend and I have already decided a career to follow: we are going to work as engineers, although with different specialization. We have chosen engineering because there’s a variety of places where it’s possible to find work. In addition to that, it’s a very lucrative profession, and since Brasil is a poor country with a very high inflation rate, you never know when you will need some saved money.
We expect to broaden our views about how things work and, above all, make them work. We expect to learn how to organize and develop processes of concretizing small projects and big ones, and to be part of the integrated professional network that makes possible to heighten people’s life quality.
Engineering market is also spreading fast, but more qualification is needed in order to be employed, but we are ready for the challenge because engineering is intimately connected to mathematics, and as we both like mathematics a lot, it will not be a problem to study each time more to develop our skills.
We really sympathize with the engineering doctrine, although there’s a certain prejudice that engineers are self centered people and authentic nerds. The truth is that an engineer is a versatile individual and, without this professional, all the comfort found in cities would not exist.
Coincidentally, our parents are engineers, and that was a great influence in our choice, once we have had contact with this profession since we were young. With them we can clarify our doubts and ask about life as an engineer.
We had also pondered about being musicians, but after deep thought, we came to the conclusion that music should be a hobby and not a profession, since the possibilities of it going wrong are countless. By choosing engineering as a life career, the chances of being successful in our future are highly increased.
Oh, by the way we don’t want to be cooking chefs (heheheheh...).
