Soccer, its importance in Brazil (as submitted to Planetary Magazine)

Submitted by Luciana Pimentel on Wednesday, October 06, 2004 at 01:23:49 AM EST.

The Brazilian soccer style is a reflex of our people's culture. These people who dance samba and use creativity and swing promote various rhythms and choreographies. This agility is valued by the Brazilian popular culture through the dance, capoeira, and soccer.
Soccer is a mirror of the Brazilian society and idols are generated by the media and imitated by children. Great idols of soccer such as Pelé, Garrincha, Zico, Romário, Ronaldo, and many others from lower social classes started playing soccer on dirty fields under poor conditions. If they were not soccer players, they would probably have had the same destination of their old friends in their communities of origin that today are motoboys (delivery boys on motorcycles), van drivers, or would have died in confrontations with the police or drug dealers.
As a conclusion, soccer in Brazil is not just a kind of sport, it is an important social cultural expression.
